Responsible for the content

Name, postal address and a working email address belong here. In Germany and Austria this is legally required for websites, in Switzerland for anyone offering something — and quite apart from the law, teachers and parents expect to see who owns a children's site before they pass the link on.

Content and sources

Every figure on this site comes from a named public dataset or is calculated from one; the source and its year are printed on the page that uses it. Where sources genuinely disagree, the page says so rather than quietly picking an answer. There is more about that on the page about this site.

The photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under free licences; every credit is in the picture credits.

Liability for links

This site links to Wikimedia Commons and to the pages of individual photographers. We have no influence over their content and take no responsibility for it.

How this site makes money

With nothing. There is no advertising, no ad network, no paid placements, no affiliate links, no shop and no subscription. There are also no investors whose expectations have to be met. It is worth saying, because it explains why there is no cookie banner and why the quizzes have no clock: nobody here would profit from a child staying longer than they meant to.

The running costs are a domain and a hosting plan. The site is finished HTML files with no database and no server-side code, which makes it cheap enough that it does not have to pay for itself.

For schools and parents

These pages may be used in class, printed out and passed on. No sign-up is needed, no data is collected from children, and there is nothing that can be bought while using them. The photographs are under free licences; anyone wanting to reuse one elsewhere will find its creator and the licence permitting that in the picture credits.

What this site is not: not a curriculum-aligned teaching resource, not a replacement for a textbook, and not a peer-reviewed source. It is a carefully made reference that names its sources — which makes it quotable, not official.

Found a mistake?

A wrong figure, a misspelt name, a photograph that should not be here: write to the address above. Correcting mistakes matters more on a site for children than on most others — children believe what it says.
