The story behind it
Indawgyi Lake is the largest lake that lies entirely inside Myanmar. It is about 24 km long and more than 10 km wide. A stream called the Indaw Chaung carries its water to the great Irrawaddy River. About 36 villages lie around the lake, where Shan and Kachin people grow crops and catch fish, and most people here get their drinking water from the lake. More than 160 kinds of birds have been seen in the area. Rare white-rumped vultures and slender-billed vultures live here all year round and raise their young. More than 65 kinds of fish swim in the water, and hog deer and hoolock gibbons live in the area around it. The lake is a wildlife sanctuary, and since 2017 it has also been a UNESCO biosphere reserve, a place where people and nature are meant to get along well. Its size is given differently in different sources.
Find it on the globe
Indawgyi Lake is there as a small blue dot with its name, right on the water. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
