The story behind it
Bazardüzü stands on the northern edge of Azerbaijan, where the mountain wall of the Greater Caucasus separates the country from Dagestan in Russia. Its northern side falls away in dark cliffs and gullies that hold hard snow even in August, while the southern slopes are gentler and covered with grass in summer. The name is usually linked to markets in the valleys below, where traders once met with animals and goods before crossing the passes. Up on the heights the wind blows almost without pause, and clouds can swallow the whole ridge in minutes. Wild sheep and eagles live in this quiet world of stone, and far below shepherds set up camps with their flocks. Walkers reach the summit from high camps in summer, but the thin air and sudden storms make the trip a serious one.
Find it on the globe
Bazardüzü is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
