Boggy Peak

Boggy Peak is the highest hill of Antigua and Barbuda, a green dome of 402 metres in the south-west of the island of Antigua. From its top the Caribbean Sea shines in every direction.

Where is Boggy Peak?

Boggy Peak is part of the Shekerley Mountains, Antigua.

You will find it in: Antigua and Barbuda.

Summit: 17.045° N, 61.861° W

The story behind it

Boggy Peak belongs to the Shekerley Mountains, a row of old volcanic hills that were pushed up long before the flat, sandy part of Antigua took shape. The rock here is hard and dark, and under the trees it feels cooler and damper than anywhere else on the island, which is how the hill probably earned its wet-sounding name. A narrow road climbs to the antennas on the summit, so a walk up takes a morning rather than a whole day, and the reward is a view over bays, reefs and sugar-cane fields. Hummingbirds buzz around the flowers, land crabs cross the track after rain, and mango and tamarind trees grow in the gardens on the lower slopes. Since 2009 the hill also carries the official name Mount Obama, and both names are used on the island.

Find it on the globe

Boggy Peak is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Boggy Peak?

The summit stands 402 metres above sea level. That is modest for a mountain, yet on a small flat island it is enough to look out over half the coastline at once.

Which country is Boggy Peak in?

The hill belongs to Antigua and Barbuda, an island state in the eastern Caribbean. It stands in the south-west corner of the larger island, Antigua, among the Shekerley Mountains.

Can Boggy Peak be climbed?

Yes, a road and a rough track lead all the way to the transmitter masts on top. The climb is short but sweaty in the tropical heat, so an early start and plenty of water make it much easier.
