The story behind it
Cerro Las Minas is the top of a big block of mountain called Celaque, a name from the language of the Lenca people that is usually translated as box of water, and the mountain lives up to it, because dozens of rivers and streams begin on its slopes and supply towns far below. The forest changes as the path climbs: oak and pine at first, then tall trees hung with moss, bromeliads and orchids, where mist drifts between the trunks and the ground stays soft and damp. Quetzals, toucanets, tapirs and pumas live in this national park, and birdsong carries a long way through the cool air. Nights up here are cold enough for frost, which surprises many visitors in a tropical country. The usual route starts near the town of Gracias, climbs steeply for two days and passes simple camps in the forest.
Find it on the globe
Cerro Las Minas is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

The mountain belongs to Honduras, in Central America. It lies in the west of the country, inside Celaque National Park near the town of Gracias.
Can you climb Cerro Las Minas?
Yes, a marked trail leads through the park and most groups take two days with a night at a forest camp. Warm clothes, water and a park guide are recommended, because the weather turns wet and cold quickly.
