Where is Cerro Tres Kandú?
Cerro Tres Kandú is part of the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú.
You will find it in: Paraguay.
Summit: 25.902° S, 56.160° W
The story behind it
The Ybytyruzú hills are built of old sandstone, and rain has cut them into rounded backs with red cliffs showing through the trees, so Tres Kandú looks more like a big green loaf than a rocky peak. Its slopes still carry patches of the Atlantic forest that once covered this part of South America, with tall trees, tree ferns, orchids on the branches and troops of noisy howler monkeys in the early morning. Both the mountain name and the range name come from Guaraní, the language spoken every day in Paraguay next to Spanish, and Ybytyruzú means something like big hill country. Warm, damp air rises against the slope, so clouds form quickly here and short heavy showers are common in summer. The whole range is a protected reserve, with farms and small villages between the wooded ridges.
Find it on the globe
Cerro Tres Kandú is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
Questions children ask
How high is Cerro Tres Kandú?
The summit lies 842 metres above sea level. Paraguay is a flat country of plains and rivers, so this wooded hill already counts as its roof.
Which country is Cerro Tres Kandú in?
The hill lies in Paraguay, in the south of the country, inside the Ybytyruzú range. Paraguay has no coast at all, so the nearest sea is many hundreds of kilometres away.
Can you climb Cerro Tres Kandú?
Yes, a path leads up through farmland and forest and takes a few hours at an easy pace. The track crosses private ground, so walkers ask the owners first, and plenty of water plus protection against ticks and the strong sun are sensible.
