Jabal ad Dukhan
Jabal ad Dukhan is the highest point of Bahrain, a rocky rise of 134 metres. Its name means Mountain of Smoke, because a haze often hangs around it. Bare desert stretches out in every direction below.

The story behind it
Bahrain is a flat island country in the Persian Gulf, so a hill of 134 metres is enough to become its highest point. Jabal ad Dukhan is built of pale limestone that was once the floor of a warm sea, and wind and rare rain have carved the rock into ledges and shallow caves. On hot days the air above the desert shimmers and a thin haze wraps the hill, which is how it earned its name as the mountain of smoke. Around its foot stand the pumps of the country's first oil field, together with a few hardy acacias, thorny bushes and lizards that dart between the stones. A road brings visitors close to the summit, from where the view reaches over sand, salt flats and the shining water of the gulf.
Find it on the globe
Jabal ad Dukhan is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
