The story behind it

The desert around the mountain is a plain of orange sand out of which huge rock walls rise almost straight up, like islands in a dry sea. Underneath lies hard granite, and on top of it sits sandstone that wind and sand have carved into towers, arches and hollows. Days are baking hot and nights can be cold enough for a jacket, because dry air loses its warmth quickly after sunset. Bedouin families have lived in this desert for a very long time, keeping camels and goats and knowing where the few water holes are. The walk to the summit takes two or three hours over boulders and slabs, usually with a guide from the area, and on clear mornings you can look down towards the Red Sea near Aqaba.

Find it on the globe

Jabal Umm ad-Dami is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

How high is Jabal Umm ad-Dami?

The summit reaches 1 854 metres above sea level. It stands about a thousand metres above the desert floor that surrounds it, which makes it look bigger than the number suggests.

Which country is Jabal Umm ad-Dami in?

The mountain lies in Jordan, in the far south of the country. Its slopes reach right to the boundary with Saudi Arabia.

Can you climb Jabal Umm ad-Dami?

Yes, and many desert trips include it. A jeep brings visitors across the sand to the foot of the mountain, from where a scramble of two to three hours leads up; going with a local guide and starting early avoids the worst heat.
