Julianatop

Julianatop reaches 1280 metres in the Wilhelmina Mountains and is the highest point of Suriname. Rainforest covers the whole mountain, so the rounded summit is hard to pick out from far away.

Where is Julianatop?

Julianatop is part of the Wilhelmina Mountains.

You will find it in: Suriname.

Summit: 3.750° N, 56.500° W

The story behind it

Julianatop lies deep in the interior of Suriname, far from roads and towns, in a green sea of rainforest that stretches for hundreds of kilometres. The mountain is a rounded hump of very old, hard rock, worn down over an enormous stretch of time until only this dome stood above the land around it, and measurements of its height differ by a few metres, which is why maps do not always agree. Rain falls on nearly every day of the year and feeds creeks that tumble over black boulders before joining the wide rivers used by Maroon and Indigenous communities for travel. Near the summit the forest grows low and mossy, with orchids and bromeliads perched on the branches, while jaguars, tapirs and macaws move through the taller trees below. The peak carries the name of a Dutch queen and sees mostly researchers, who arrive by helicopter or after long journeys by boat and on foot.

Find it on the globe

Julianatop is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Julianatop?

Julianatop is given as 1280 metres above sea level. Surveys in such thick forest are difficult, so different sources vary by a few metres, yet no other point in Suriname is higher.

Which country is Julianatop in?

Julianatop belongs to Suriname, a country on the northern coast of South America. The summit stands in the middle of the country, inside a huge protected rainforest with no roads leading there.

Can you climb Julianatop?

Julianatop is rarely climbed, because the hard part is not the slope but reaching the mountain at all through pathless rainforest. Expeditions travel by boat and helicopter, carry everything with them and need permission for the nature reserve.
