The story behind it

Khazret Sultan is not a slender spire but a heavy block of rock and snow at the eastern end of Uzbekistan, right where the country meets Tajikistan. The mountain belongs to the Pamir-Alai, a system of ranges built when great slabs of the Earth's crust pushed against each other and folded the old sea floor into limestone and slate walls. Its name is usually explained as Holy Sultan, a title of respect, and the peak is sometimes called the throne of that saint. Snowfields lie on the upper slopes all year, and meltwater runs down in cold streams that shepherds follow with their flocks in summer. The height given for the summit is not the same in every source, because the border area was surveyed at different times, and the figures differ by a few metres.

Find it on the globe

Khazret Sultan is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Khazret Sultan?

The summit is given as 4 643 metres above sea level. Different surveys of this border region do not agree exactly, so other maps may show a slightly different figure.

Which country is Khazret Sultan in?

The peak is the highest point of Uzbekistan and lies in the far south-east of the country. The frontier with Tajikistan runs across the same mountain group.

Can Khazret Sultan be climbed?

Experienced mountaineers do reach the summit, but the route crosses snowfields and steep rock at high altitude and needs proper equipment. The area is remote and close to a national border, so permits and a local guide are usually required.
