Kneiff
The Kneiff is the highest point in Luxembourg at 560 metres. It stands in the wooded Oesling region in the north of the country and feels more like a gentle hill than a real peak.

The story behind it
Finding the Kneiff takes a little patience, because the highest point of Luxembourg is a wide open field near the village of Huldange, right beside the Belgian border. Pastures, spruce plantations and hedges cover the plateau, and since nothing blocks the weather up here, a cool wind blows across it on most days of the year. Dark slate lies under the grass, a rock that splits into thin plates and once roofed the farmhouses of the Oesling region. The neighbouring hill Buurgplaatz is only about a metre lower, so the two rises have been quietly competing for first place for a long time. No steep path leads upwards; a farm track brings walkers to a plain marker stone that often surprises visitors who expected something far grander.
Find it on the globe
Kneiff is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
Questions children ask
How high is the Kneiff?
The Kneiff reaches 560 metres above sea level. Nowhere else in Luxembourg does the ground rise higher, even though the spot looks like an ordinary field.
Which country is the Kneiff in?
The hill belongs to Luxembourg and lies in the northern Oesling region near the village of Huldange. The Belgian border runs only a short walk away, so both countries are visible from the same field.
Can you climb the Kneiff?
Walking up is easy and needs no equipment at all. A farm track leads from the road to the marker stone, and small children manage the last stretch in a few minutes.
