Mont Nabemba

Mont Nabemba is the highest mountain in the Republic of the Congo, rising 1 020 metres above a sea of rainforest. It lies in the far north of the country, in the green Sangha region.

Where is Mont Nabemba?

Mont Nabemba is part of the Sangha region.

You will find it in: the Republic of the Congo.

Summit: 1.850° N, 13.983° E

The story behind it

Mont Nabemba is not a bare rock peak. Dense rainforest climbs almost to the very top, so anyone walking up spends most of the day under a roof of leaves, with roots and mud underfoot. The mountain is made of very old, hard rock that has resisted the heavy rain for an enormous time, while the softer ground around it slowly wore down into low hills. Clouds gather on the slopes nearly every afternoon and the air stays warm and damp all year, which is why moss and ferns grow on almost every branch. The forests of the Sangha region are home to forest elephants, gorillas and loud grey parrots, and people from the villages nearby know the hidden paths best. There is no road and no marked trail to the summit; a visit means a long walk with a local guide.

Find it on the globe

Mont Nabemba is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
