Mont Ngaoui

The story behind it

In the west of the Central African Republic the land lifts into a wide highland of hard granite, and Mont Ngaoui is its highest shoulder, sitting exactly on the border with Cameroon. Many rivers begin on these heights, because the rain that falls here has to run off somewhere, and streams cut narrow green bands of gallery forest into the open savanna. From about April to October the rains bring tall grass, thunder and quick-growing plants, while the dry months turn the slopes brown and grass fires drift across the ridges. Herders move their cattle over the plateau, and villages lie in the valleys where water lasts all year. Few travellers come this far, so the mountain is known mostly to the people who live around it and to the birds of the open woodland.

Find it on the globe

Mont Ngaoui is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Mont Ngaoui?

The summit reaches 1410 metres above sea level. Since the surrounding plateau is already high, the mountain rises only a few hundred metres above the land around it.

Which country is Mont Ngaoui in?

It is the highest point of the Central African Republic, in the west of the country. The summit sits directly on the border with Cameroon, in the Yade Massif.

Can you climb Mont Ngaoui?

The mountain can be walked up on herders' paths across grass and granite slabs, without technical climbing. The region is remote and hard to travel in, so very few people make the trip and good local knowledge is essential.
