The story behind it

Morne Diablotins is an old volcano that has not erupted in living memory, yet the whole island is built from volcanic rock and steam still hisses out of the ground in other valleys. Rain falls here almost every day, so the mountain is covered by a forest of enormous trees, tree ferns and plants that grow on branches high above the ground. The name comes from the diablotin, a seabird that nests in burrows on steep slopes and calls at night with strange, moaning cries. In the forests below live the sisserou, a big purple and green parrot found only on this island and shown on the national flag. A protected national park covers the mountain, and the single trail to the top is steep, slippery and full of roots, so most walkers need a whole day.

Find it on the globe

Morne Diablotins is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
