Morne Seychellois

Morne Seychellois is 905 metres high and the highest point of the Seychelles. The granite summit stands on the island of Mahé, above beaches, palm forest and the blue Indian Ocean.

Where is Morne Seychellois?

Morne Seychellois is part of the Mahé Island.

You will find it in: the Seychelles.

Summit: 4.644° S, 55.439° E

The story behind it

Mahé is not a volcano but a piece of very old granite, left behind when the land masses of the south broke apart, so the island is really the top of a sunken block of continent. That granite weathers into smooth grey domes and rounded boulders, and Morne Seychellois is the biggest of these humps, usually with a cap of cloud sitting on it. The upper slopes belong to a national park where mist forest grows: tree ferns, wild vanilla, endemic palms and pitcher plants that catch insects in little jugs on the bare rock. Below, cinnamon trees planted long ago have spread through the woods, and paths from Danzil and Copolia climb past old ruins into the forest. The climb is short but steep, and rain makes the granite slabs slippery.

Find it on the globe

Morne Seychellois is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Morne Seychellois?

The summit reaches 905 metres above sea level. Nothing on the other islands of the group comes close, because most of them are low coral islands only a few metres high.

Which country is Morne Seychellois in?

The mountain belongs to the Seychelles and stands on Mahé, the main island, above the capital Victoria. The country lies in the Indian Ocean, east of the African mainland.

Can you climb Morne Seychellois?

Yes, a forest trail leads towards the top and takes a few hours there and back. The last stretch is steep, overgrown and slippery after rain, so many visitors go with a local guide and set off in the cool morning hours.
