The story behind it

The Bahamas are flat islands made of limestone, rock that was once built by corals and shells in a warm shallow sea, so a hill of 63 metres is already the roof of the whole country. Mount Alvernia rises in the middle of Cat Island, and from the top the eye follows the pale beaches on one side and the dark blue of the open ocean on the other. A priest who was also a builder cut steps into the rock and raised a tiny stone hermitage up there, with a chapel, a bell tower and rooms so small that an adult has to stoop. Palms, sea grape and thorny bushes grow on the slope, lizards bask on the warm stones, and hurricanes sometimes sweep across the island in late summer. The walk to the summit takes only about ten minutes.

Find it on the globe

Mount Alvernia (Como Hill) is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Mount Alvernia?

The hill reaches 63 metres above sea level. That makes it the lowest highest point of any country in the Americas, and it is still visible from far out at sea.

Which country is Mount Alvernia in?

It belongs to the Bahamas, an island country in the Atlantic Ocean. The hill, also called Como Hill, lies on Cat Island in the eastern part of the group.

Can you climb Mount Alvernia?

Yes, and it is one of the easiest summits in the world to reach. Steps carved into the limestone lead from the road to the hermitage in about ten minutes, and the little rooms up there can be visited.
