The story behind it
Mount Gimie is what remains of an old volcano that rain and rivers have carved for a very long time, so instead of a smooth cone it now has narrow ridges, deep green valleys and sudden rock faces. Because the mountain catches the wind coming off the Atlantic, it is one of the wettest places on Saint Lucia, and water drips from every leaf even when the sun shines on the coast. Giant ferns, bromeliads and orchids grow on the trunks, and the forest is home to the Saint Lucia parrot, a blue and green bird with a red chest that lives nowhere else in the world. Many of the island's rivers begin on these slopes and supply the towns with drinking water. The route to the summit is rough, muddy and hard to follow, so walkers go with local guides.
Find it on the globe
Mount Gimie is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
