Mount Hillaby

Mount Hillaby is the highest point of Barbados, a green hilltop of 340 metres in the parish of Saint Andrew. From there the island rolls away in fields, gullies and palm trees.

Where is Mount Hillaby?

Mount Hillaby is part of the Saint Andrew.

You will find it in: Barbados.

Summit: 13.210° N, 59.582° W

The story behind it

Barbados is mostly a low island built from old coral that grew when the sea covered everything, and Mount Hillaby is the place where that coral cap has been worn away. Around the hill lies the Scotland District, a rumpled corner of clay and sandstone where the ground slips and slides after heavy rain, so roads there need constant repair. Rainwater sinks quickly into the limestone of the rest of the island and travels through caves, which is why so few streams run on the surface. Green monkeys with grey fur move through the trees near the summit, and sugar cane, breadfruit and mahogany grow on the slopes. A narrow lane brings visitors close to the top, and on a clear day the Atlantic coast with its white surf is easy to pick out.

Find it on the globe

Mount Hillaby is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Mount Hillaby?

The top lies 340 metres above sea level. Barbados has no real mountains, so this gentle rise is enough to look across a large part of the island and out to the ocean.

Which country is Mount Hillaby in?

The hill lies in Barbados, an island country in the eastern Caribbean. It rises in the parish of Saint Andrew, in the rougher north-eastern part of the island.

Can Mount Hillaby be climbed?

Yes, and it is an easy outing rather than a climb, because small roads and tracks lead almost to the highest ground. Much of the land around belongs to farms, so visitors keep to the lanes and ask before crossing fields.
