Mount Korab
Mount Korab is the highest summit of Albania and of North Macedonia at once, a pale limestone pyramid of 2 764 metres in the Korab Mountains. Shepherds bring sheep to its meadows, and the last stretch to the top is bare stone.

The story behind it
Mount Korab rises on the eastern edge of Albania, right where the country meets its neighbour North Macedonia, so the summit ridge looks down into two lands at once. The mountain is built of limestone that rain has dissolved into hollows, caves and sharp ribs, and water often disappears underground instead of running down in streams. In spring the meadows below the rocks turn into a carpet of yellow and purple flowers, and shepherds move up with their flocks for the short mountain summer. A waterfall drops over a cliff on the slopes, and chamois, hares and eagles share the quiet upper ground. Most walkers start early from a hut in the valley and follow marked poles across grass and scree, because clouds and thunderstorms often gather around the summit in the afternoon.
Find it on the globe
Mount Korab is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
Questions children ask
How high is Mount Korab?
The summit reaches 2 764 metres above sea level. It is the highest ground in Albania and in North Macedonia, high enough for snow patches to survive in shaded gullies until early summer.
Which country is Mount Korab in?
The border between Albania and North Macedonia runs right across the summit, so the same peak is the highest point of both countries. It stands in the east of Albania and in the west of North Macedonia.
Can Mount Korab be climbed?
Yes, a long hiking route leads up through pastures and scree without climbing gear. It takes a full day, the way is poorly signposted in places, and groups usually walk with someone who knows the mountain.
