The story behind it

Liamuiga is a sleeping volcano whose summit is hollowed out by a crater roughly a kilometre across, with steep green walls and a small lake far down in the bottom. Clouds hang on the peak for most of the day, so the upper slopes are a wet forest of tall trees, ferns and hanging vines where hummingbirds and green monkeys move through the branches. Lower down the land flattens into old sugar cane fields that once covered the whole coast of the island. The name comes from the Kalinago people, who lived here before European ships arrived and called the island Liamuiga, usually explained as fertile land. The path to the crater rim is short but very muddy, with roots for steps and a rope to help on the last steep stretch, and walkers normally go up with a guide.

Find it on the globe

Mount Liamuiga is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
