Mount Nyangani

Mount Nyangani is the highest mountain in Zimbabwe, reaching 2 592 metres. It rises in the Eastern Highlands near the border with Mozambique, above moorland, waterfalls and cool green valleys.

Where is Mount Nyangani?

Mount Nyangani is part of the Eastern Highlands.

You will find it in: Zimbabwe.

Summit: 18.300° S, 32.842° E

The story behind it

Nyangani is a wide granite dome rather than a pointed peak, and its bare rock was shaped over an enormous span of time, long before the valleys around it were cut. The upper slopes are covered with tough grass, heather and low bushes, while forest fills the sheltered gullies where mist collects, and small streams tumble off the edge in waterfalls. Weather is the main challenge here: warm sunshine can turn to thick cloud and cold rain within an hour, and walkers who leave the marked path have become lost on the broad, featureless top. For people in the region the mountain is a sacred place with its own rules, and visitors are asked to stay on the path and take nothing away. The whole area belongs to Nyanga National Park, where antelope, baboons and eagles are often seen.

Find it on the globe

Mount Nyangani is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Mount Nyangani?

The summit stands 2 592 metres above sea level and is the highest ground in Zimbabwe. The walk from the car park gains only a few hundred metres, because the road already starts high up.

Which country is Mount Nyangani in?

The mountain lies in Zimbabwe, in the Eastern Highlands close to the border with Mozambique. It stands inside Nyanga National Park, a few hours by road from the city of Mutare.

Can Mount Nyangani be climbed?

A marked path leads from the road to the summit and the round trip takes roughly three hours without any climbing. Mist can arrive very fast, so walkers register at the gate, stay on the path and turn back early when the cloud closes in.
