The story behind it

Mount Saint Catherine is a stratovolcano, a cone built up over a long time from layers of lava and ash, and it has been quiet for a very long while, though warm springs at its foot show that heat still sits deep below. On the lower slopes people grow nutmeg, cocoa and bananas, and the smell of drying spice hangs around the villages of Saint Mark. Higher up the farmland gives way to rainforest and then to elfin woodland, where wind and mist keep the trees short and every trunk is wrapped in moss. Mona monkeys, armadillos, hummingbirds and tree frogs live in these forests, and the frogs are often easier to hear than to see. The climb starts near Belvidere or Union, follows a steep, slippery ridge and takes a few hours, with roots and bamboo serving as handholds.

Find it on the globe

Mount Saint Catherine is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Mount Saint Catherine?

Which country is Mount Saint Catherine in?

The mountain belongs to Grenada, an island state in the eastern Caribbean. It rises in the parish of Saint Mark, in the northern half of the main island.

Can you climb Mount Saint Catherine?

Yes, footpaths lead up from villages such as Belvidere and Union, and the walk takes a few hours. The ground is steep and often slippery, so sturdy shoes and a guide make the day much easier.
