Where is Mount Mulanje?
Mount Mulanje is part of the Mulanje Massif, an inselberg.
You will find it in: Malawi.
Summit: 15.950° S, 35.594° E
The story behind it
About 130 million years ago molten rock pushed up into the crust and cooled there; everything softer around it has worn away since, leaving the massif standing alone above the plain like an island, which is exactly what geographers mean by an inselberg. On top there is no single sharp summit but rolling grassland at 1 800 to 2 200 m, cut by deep wooded ravines, with a whole crowd of peaks rising out of it. More than 2 500 mm of rain falls up there each year, and a cold drizzle called the chiperoni can wrap the plateau in mist for days on end. The Mulanje cedar grows nowhere else on Earth; it has been Malawi's national tree since 1984, its pale timber smells sweet and shrugs off termites, and it is now listed as critically endangered, defended with firebreaks, forest patrols and replanting. For the Mang'anja, Yao and Lomwe peoples the mountain is a home of ancestral spirits, and walkers still trade stories about food left on the plateau and about Napolo, a serpent said to stir up the mist. In July 2025 UNESCO put Mulanje on the World Heritage List as the Mount Mulanje Cultural Landscape, chosen for its living traditions rather than only for its rock. Sapitwa is recorded as first climbed in 1894, but exactly who stood there first is not firmly documented.
Find it on the globe
Mount Mulanje is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
Questions children ask
How high is Mount Mulanje?
Sapitwa Peak reaches 3 002 m, the highest point in Malawi. What makes it feel enormous is the 2 323 m of prominence: the plain around it is low, so the massif seems to start from nothing.
Where is Mount Mulanje?
In the far south of Malawi, close to the border with Mozambique. From the summit the view runs across southern Malawi and on into Mozambique.
Which tree grows only on Mulanje?
The Mulanje cedar, Widdringtonia whytei, found between roughly 1 830 and 2 550 m on this massif and nowhere else. It is Malawi's national tree and is listed as critically endangered.
