Musala

Musala rises 2 925 metres above Bulgaria's Rila mountains and is the highest point not only of Bulgaria but of the whole Balkan Peninsula. Its name once meant a place of prayer.

Where is Musala?

Musala is part of the Rila Mountains.

You will find it in: Bulgaria.

Summit: 42.180° N, 23.587° E

The story behind it

The name Musala travelled a long way: it comes from the Arabic word musalla, a place for prayer, and reached Bulgarian through Ottoman Turkish. Nobody knows who stood on the summit first, because shepherds and hunters in the Rila had been walking these ridges long before anyone kept records. Around the peak lie the Musala lakes, part of the roughly 189 glacial lakes scattered through the Rila mountains, each one a bowl scooped out by ice long ago. Right next door stands Malka Musala, 2 902 metres high, which means Bulgaria's two highest summits are neighbours that almost touch. Most walkers start at the ski resort of Borovets, ride the gondola up to Yastrebets and then follow the path past the huts and the lakes to the top. Snow can lie on the upper slopes into late June, and storms build fast, so the mountain is climbed mostly between July and early September. On the summit itself scientists run the Basic Environmental Observatory Moussala, where instruments sample clean high air and cosmic rays; a first cosmic-ray station was built there in 1960 and a later fire in 1983 ended that chapter, but the research came back.

Find it on the globe

Musala is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Musala?

2 925 metres, which makes it the highest mountain in Bulgaria and in the whole Balkan Peninsula, a little higher than Mount Olympus in Greece and a little lower than Germany's Zugspitze.

Where is Musala?

In the Rila mountains of south-western Bulgaria, roughly 80 kilometres south of the capital Sofia, above the ski resort of Borovets.

Why is there a laboratory on the summit?

Because the air up there is far from cities and traffic. The Moussala observatory samples that clean air and also measures cosmic rays, particles that arrive from space and are easier to catch high above the valleys.
