The story behind it

Qatar is a flat tongue of land in the Persian Gulf, and its whole surface is made of pale limestone that was once the floor of a warm sea, which is why small shell prints can still be found in the loose stones. Wind and rare rain have worn that rock down almost everywhere, leaving only a few low tables and humps standing, and this one is simply the highest of them. The ground around it is gravel and sand, with salt flats that shine white after a shower and scattered dry bushes where camels graze. Days can be extremely hot, but the desert cools quickly at night, and beetles, lizards and desert larks come out when the sand has lost its heat. The name is Arabic and points to a small horn or knoll rather than to a real mountain.

Find it on the globe

Qurayn Abu al Bawl is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is Qurayn Abu al Bawl?

The top of the rise lies 103 metres above sea level. Many church towers are taller, but in a country as flat as Qatar even this low hill is the highest ground.

Which country is Qurayn Abu al Bawl in?

The hill lies in Qatar, on the peninsula that reaches into the Persian Gulf. It stands in the south of the country, in open desert far from the coastal cities.

Can you climb Qurayn Abu al Bawl?

Walking to the top takes only a few minutes once the place is reached, because the slope is gentle and low. Getting there is the harder part: the tracks cross open desert, so a suitable vehicle, water and a working navigation device matter more than climbing skill.
