The story behind it
Saka Haphong lies in a corner of Bangladesh that looks nothing like the flat delta most people picture, because here rows of steep green hills follow one another to the horizon. Which of these hills is really the highest has been argued about for years, and the measurements differ by a few metres from one survey to the next. Bamboo, banana plants and tall grass cover the slopes, and small villages of the Mro and other hill peoples sit on the ridges, reached by narrow footpaths. The monsoon brings heavy rain for months, streams swell and leeches appear on the damp ground, while the dry winter months are cool and clear. Visitors who want to reach the top walk for two or three days with local guides and need permission, because this is a remote border area.
Find it on the globe
Saka Haphong is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
Questions children ask
How high is Saka Haphong?
The summit is usually given as 1 063 metres above sea level. Surveys with different instruments produce slightly different numbers, so maps of the region do not always agree.
Which country is Saka Haphong in?
The hill belongs to Bangladesh, in the south-eastern district of Bandarban. It lies in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, only a short distance from the border with Myanmar.
Can Saka Haphong be climbed?
Reaching the top is a trek rather than a climb, along muddy paths, bamboo slopes and stream beds. The area is remote and close to a border, so travellers need official permission and go with guides from the villages.
