The story behind it

Kuwait is one of the flattest countries in the world, so its highest point is not a peak at all but the edge of a stony desert plateau that lifts slowly towards the border in the west. There is no summit cross and no name on the map, and the different measurements of this spot disagree by a few metres, which is why maps sometimes give slightly different numbers. The ground is gravel and cracked earth, pale brown and dotted with tough little bushes that go green for a short while after the winter rains. Shallow dry valleys called wadis cut across the plain and carry water only after a storm. Herders drive camels and sheep through this country, and in summer the air shimmers over the stones because the sun heats them past fifty degrees. From the rise the desert looks almost endless in every direction.

Find it on the globe

The Unnamed rise in the west is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Questions children ask

How high is the highest point of Kuwait?

The rise in the west reaches 291 metres above sea level. That is lower than many church towers, but nothing in Kuwait rises above it.

Which country is this rise in?

The spot lies in Kuwait, a small state at the northern end of the Persian Gulf. It belongs to Al Jahra Governorate in the west of the country.

Can you visit the highest point of Kuwait?

There is no path and no marker, so people who want to stand there drive across open desert with a four-wheel vehicle and a satellite receiver. The area is empty and very hot in summer, and the nearby border zone is guarded, so a trip needs careful planning.
