The story behind it
Zla Kolata belongs to a wild group of peaks that people on both sides of the border call the Accursed Mountains, and its own name means roughly the bad Kolata, because the rock here is sharp, broken and hard to walk on. The whole range is built of limestone, which lets rainwater sink straight into the ground, so hikers pass funnels, cracks and caves instead of streams and must carry their own water. Snow stays in shady hollows long into the summer, while on the sunny slopes gentians and other small flowers open between the stones. Chamois pick their way across the scree, bears live in the beech forests far below, and shepherds still bring flocks up to summer huts in the Grbaja valley. The Montenegrin side belongs to a national park.
Find it on the globe
Zla Kolata is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
