The story behind it

On a small island even a short river matters a great deal, and Great River is one of those. Rain falls almost daily on the green mountains, so clear water rushes down steep, rocky beds and past little waterfalls. On the slopes people grow nutmeg, cocoa and bananas, and the river helps to wash and cool the harvest. Freshwater crayfish hide under stones, crabs scuttle along the banks and children swim in the deeper pools where the current slows down. When a hurricane strikes Grenada the friendly stream turns into a brown torrent that can tear out bridges and gardens in a single afternoon. Nobody has published a reliable length for Great River, and islanders sometimes disagree about which of their rivers deserves the title of the longest.
