The story behind it

This river carries several names: in Eswatini people call it Lusutfu, others say Usuthu, and after the border it becomes the Maputo. Because of that, books rarely agree on its exact length, and no reliable figure is given here. It starts as a small stream on the cool, grassy highveld and grows as it crosses the country from west to east. On the way it cuts deep gorges through hard rock, and rafters ride the rapids there when the water is high. In the hot lowveld it waters huge fields of sugar cane around the town of Big Bend. Crocodiles and hippos rest in the quiet pools, while fish eagles call from the trees. Summer rains can bring sudden floods, and in winter the river runs low and clear.

Questions children ask

How long is the Great Usutu?

Which country does the Great Usutu flow through?

Its main course crosses Eswatini from west to east. Farther on, its water flows through Mozambique before reaching the sea.

Where does the Great Usutu end?
