The story behind it
In the lowlands of La Mosquitia there are almost no roads, so the Patuca itself is the highway. Long dugout canoes with small outboard motors carry people, bananas, school books and sacks of rice from village to village. The forest on both sides belongs to one of the largest wild areas in Central America: jaguars leave footprints on the sandbanks, scarlet macaws cross the river in noisy pairs, and tapirs come down to drink at dusk. Tawahka and Miskito families have lived here for centuries and fish with nets and lines. A narrow gorge with rough rapids forces boatmen to steer carefully. After hurricanes the river can rise many metres and tear whole banks away, and near the sea it winds through swamps where manatees graze on water plants.
