The story behind it
Saint Lucia is a volcanic island where clouds hang on the peaks almost every day, so the mountains are covered with dripping rainforest. The Roseau River collects that rain and carries it down a broad green valley planted with bananas. A dam across the valley holds a lake that supplies drinking water to much of the island, and in dry months the level can sink worryingly low. After a tropical storm the opposite happens: the river turns brown, tears at the banks and carries mud into the sea, where the water stays cloudy for days. Parrots screech in the treetops upstream, and crabs scuttle over the stones near the mouth. Almost nothing about this river has been measured, so its exact length is not written down anywhere.
