What is being measured here
Height is measured from sea level to the summit. That sounds simple until you meet a mountain whose top is an ice cap that grows and shrinks each year, or one measured three times by three surveys that disagree by a few metres. Where that happens, the mountain’s own page says so.
Almost every mountain on this list stands in one corner of the world: the Himalaya and the Karakoram, where India is still pushing into Asia. Nothing outside that corner comes close — the highest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, would sit far below the last row here. Only some of these hundred have a page of their own on this site; the rest are rows, because a name and a height are all that is known about them here.
How to read this list
Read the list from the top down. The left column is the rank, the middle one is the name and the range it belongs to, and the right column is the height above sea level. Only some of the names are links, because only some of these mountains have a page of their own here. Nothing is rounded to make a nicer story: where two peaks are a few metres apart, they really are.
Questions children ask
Which is the highest mountain in the world?
Mount Everest is first on this list.
Where do the numbers in this list come from?
They come from public datasets, named at the bottom of this page, and the ranking is calculated from them rather than copied from another list. Where a figure is genuinely disputed, the page for that place says so.
How many entries are on this list?
This list shows 100, ordered by real figures from the datasets named at the bottom of the page.
Where these numbers come from
The heights on this list come from one public list, so the rows can be compared with each other. Where a mountain has its own page here, the row takes its name and height from that page, so the two can never disagree. Ranks are calculated, not copied.
