The story behind it

This corner of Senegal looks quite different from the flat, sandy west of the country, because near the border with Guinea the land rises into low tables of red sandstone with steep edges and shallow valleys between them. The Baunez ridge is one of those edges, covered in dry savanna woodland where bamboo thickets, tall grass, baobabs and shea trees grow, while ribbons of darker forest follow the streams. For half the year almost no rain falls and the grass turns brown and crackly, then the summer rains arrive and everything sprouts again within days. Villages of the Bassari, Bedik and Malinke peoples lie in the surrounding Kédougou region, and people move on footpaths between fields rather than on marked hiking trails. The ridge carries no summit sign and sees few visitors, so many people in Senegal have never heard its name.
