The story behind it
Monaco is one of the smallest countries in the world, a strip of steep coast on the Mediterranean that a walker can cross in about an hour. Because the whole state clings to a mountainside, its highest point is simply the place where a narrow street called Chemin des Révoires runs along the slope, in a district that carries the same name. Above that line the hill keeps climbing, but the summit of Mont Agel already belongs to France, so Monaco stops halfway up. From the path the view drops over pale apartment towers, the harbour full of boats and the open blue water, and cactus gardens grow on the warm terraces nearby. Pines and dry, scented shrubs hold the rock in place, and in summer the air here smells of resin and salt.
