The story behind it
The Nimba Range looks like a long green wave standing up out of flat country, and Mount Richard-Molard is its highest wave crest. Walkers climb through cool forest first, then step out into open grassland where the wind never seems to stop. The ridge is famous among scientists: it holds plants and animals found nowhere else, among them a small toad whose young are born ready-made instead of hatching as tadpoles, and chimpanzees that crack nuts with stones. Because of these rare creatures the mountain belongs to a protected nature reserve that is listed as World Heritage. Inside the rock lies a great deal of iron ore, which is why mining companies have long been interested in the area and why protecting it causes arguments. The mountain carries the name of Jean Richard-Molard, a French geographer who studied this part of Africa.
Find it on the globe
Mount Richard-Molard (Mount Nimba) is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.
It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.

Paths do lead up through forest and grassland, but the mountain lies inside a strict nature reserve. Permission and a guide are needed, and some parts are closed so the rare animals stay undisturbed.
