The story behind it

Bintumani is the top of the Loma Mountains, a broad granite massif that lifts itself out of the forests of northern Sierra Leone. Walking up feels like crossing several countries at once, since fields and villages lie at the bottom, then tall rainforest full of vines takes over, and higher up only cool grassland and low bushes grow in the wind. Chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, small antelopes called duikers and rare birds live in the protected forest around the mountain, and hunters from the nearby villages know every path and often guide visitors. The climb usually takes two or three days from the last village, with nights in simple camps beside streams, and porters carry water because the upper slopes are dry. Mist hides the summit for much of the year, yet on a clear morning the view runs over green ridges as far as Guinea.

Find it on the globe

Mount Bintumani (Loma Mansa) is there as a small peak with its own shape — a horn, a ridge, a volcano — standing on the surface. From far away the planet is only a blue ball; detail arrives as you zoom in, and this one appears once you are close enough. Open it on the globe.

It sits at its real coordinates, not near them — the same numbers listed in the facts above. Switch off the layer for this kind of place and it disappears again; the buttons for that are down the right-hand edge.
