The story behind it
Saint Kitts is a small volcanic island, so its rivers are short and steep. The Wingfield River drops from the rainforest below Mount Liamuiga through a green valley of tree ferns, wild orchids and tall silk cotton trees. After heavy tropical rain it can swell within an hour into a loud brown torrent, and a few weeks later parts of the bed lie almost dry among the boulders. Vervet monkeys come down to drink, and hummingbirds hunt insects over the water. Beside the river stand the ruins of an old sugar estate, and on nearby rocks there are carvings made by the island's first inhabitants long before ships arrived from Europe. Very little has been measured or written down about this river, so nobody can give its exact length with certainty.
