Learn the capitals of Oceania

Oceania has 14 countries, and every one has a capital. Learn them with flashcards or test yourself: the capitals you get wrong come back sooner, the ones you know come back later, until you know them all.

How the learning game works

Every country is a card in a box with five compartments. A new card starts in the first one. Each time you know it, it moves one compartment further and comes back less often; each time you miss it, it goes back to the start. That way you spend your time on the flags and capitals you do not know yet, not on the ones you already have.

How to get good at this

The trap in a capitals quiz is the biggest city. Plenty of countries deliberately made a smaller place their capital: Brazil built Brasília in an empty middle, Australia chose Canberra so that neither Sydney nor Melbourne would win, and the United States put its government in Washington rather than New York. When the obvious city is on offer, that is often exactly why it is wrong.

Questions children ask

How many capitals are there to learn: Oceania?

14 – one for every country in the list on this page. Territories that belong to another country are not included.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, but only in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and you can delete it at any time with «Start again from zero».

Why do some cards keep coming back?

Because you did not know them yet. Cards you miss go back to the first compartment and come again soon; cards you know move on and wait longer. It is the same box method many people use to learn words in a new language.

What age is this quiz for?

It is written for roughly eight to twelve year olds, but there is nothing in it that stops an adult being caught out — the harder rounds catch most grown-ups too.
