Quiz

Whose track is this?

Ten tracks drawn to measured size, four answers each. Count the toes, look for claws, then check the scale bar — a lynx is not a house cat.

How to get good at this

Read a track in three steps. Count the toes: four means a dog or a cat, five means a marten, badger, bear or rodent, two means a hoofed animal. Then look for claws: a fox or a wolf leaves them, a cat pulls them in. Only then look at the bar under the drawing, because that is the real size — a lynx track and a house cat track have exactly the same shape, and the only thing that separates them is that one is three times the other.

How the round works

Ten questions, four answers each, and the score in the corner counts up as you go. There is no clock and nothing is taken away for a wrong answer, so thinking for a minute costs you nothing. At the end you get the list of the ones you missed, and every one of them is a link to the page that explains it — which is the part worth doing, because being wrong is the moment you are most curious about the answer.

Nothing is stored anywhere. There is no account to make, no score kept on a server and no streak that breaks if you go away for a week — the round simply starts again from the beginning, with fresh questions, whenever you come back.

Questions children ask

How does the animal track quiz work?

Each round has ten questions with four answers to choose from. There is no timer and no penalty for stopping — you can play as often as you like.

Is it free?

Yes. There is no account, no sign-up and nothing to install. It runs in the browser and works on a phone.

How many tracks can appear?

30 tracks are in this round's pool. Every one of them is drawn to a measured size, and they are picked fresh every time you play.

What age is this quiz for?

It is written for roughly eight to twelve year olds, but there is nothing in it that stops an adult being caught out — the harder rounds catch most grown-ups too.

Is my score saved anywhere?

No. The score exists only while the round is open, and nothing is sent anywhere. Close the page and it is gone.
