Why do rivers flow to the sea?

Rivers flow to the sea because gravity constantly pulls their water downhill, from higher ground near their source toward the lowest point around, which is usually sea level. Water finds and follows the easiest downhill path across the land until it reaches the ocean or another large body of water.

Gravity Always Wins

Every drop of water on a slope is pulled downward by gravity, the same force that makes a ball roll down a hill instead of sitting still. Rain falling on high ground, in hills or mountains, has nowhere to go but down, so it trickles into tiny streams, which join together into bigger streams, and eventually into a river. As the water moves, it naturally seeks out the lowest available path, flowing around rocks and hard ground rather than through them, which is why rivers curve and wind rather than travelling in perfectly straight lines. Sea level sits lower than almost anywhere on land, so it acts like a giant downhill finish line that water is always heading toward.

Carving the Path as It Goes

Rivers do not just follow existing dips in the land, they actively shape the land they flow through over long periods of time. Moving water carries small particles of rock and soil, called sediment, which act like sandpaper, slowly grinding away at the riverbed and banks and cutting the channel deeper and wider across thousands or millions of years. This process, called erosion, is what carved deep canyons like the Grand Canyon in the United States, where the Colorado River has cut down through layers of rock far below the surrounding land, and it also explains why old, established rivers tend to have wide, gentle valleys.

Where the Journey Ends

A river's journey ends where it meets a larger body of water, usually the sea or ocean, though some rivers instead flow into a lake or simply dry up in the desert before ever reaching one. This ending point is called the river's mouth, and it is often where the river slows down, spreads out and drops the sediment it has been carrying, sometimes building up new land called a delta, like the wide, fan-shaped Nile Delta in Egypt. Once river water reaches the sea, it becomes part of the ocean's enormous store of water, some of which will eventually evaporate, form clouds, fall as rain on distant mountains, and begin the whole downhill journey all over again.

Do all rivers flow into the sea?

Most rivers eventually flow into the sea, but some end in lakes, and a few flow into deserts or dry basins and disappear through evaporation before reaching any ocean. These are sometimes called endorheic rivers.

Why do rivers curve instead of flowing in straight lines?

Rivers curve because moving water follows the lowest, easiest path around obstacles like rocks and harder ground rather than cutting straight through them. Over time, flowing water also erodes softer banks unevenly, making the curves, called meanders, even more pronounced.

What is a river delta?

A river delta is new land built from sediment that a river drops when it slows down and spreads out at its mouth, where it meets the sea or a lake. The Nile Delta in Egypt and the Mississippi Delta in the United States are well-known examples.
